| < PREV | This statue is very interesting, IMHO. Rather than celebrating war, and its 'heroes' the way many statues in Britain do, this statue celebrates the avoidance of war by agreement. The (translated) enscription reads roughly, "Wars gives birth to hate between peoples, peace bringeth understanding". It refers to the peace treaty reached between Norway and Sweden to break their union in 1905. This saved them untold grief by avoiding a war. The goddess is holding a sword aloft broken in two, and her foot rests on the head of a soldiers head that resembles a skull. | NEXT > | ||||||||
