A view of the Cardrona Valley from the summit of Mt Iron. 600 years ago this valley was host to many Moa, giant flightless birds double the size of the biggest ostrich. With no natural predators, these animals had no survival strategy when humans arrived in New Zealand, and were quickly wiped out by the usual thoughtless overhunting by people.
